Berkshire Roots Edibles

Packaging Strategy, Regulatory Compliance, System Design

Cannabis packaging is one of the most demanding design environments in the CPG world. The regulatory requirements are strict, specific, and non-negotiable. If a label is off, the product can’t be sold. If the packaging isn’t child-resistant to standard, it fails compliance. And if it’s so difficult to open that customers won’t buy it twice, it fails commercially.

Good design in this category means solving all three problems at once, every time.

The Strategic Challenge

Berkshire Roots needed packaging for their edible product line that met Massachusetts cannabis regulations, maintained child resistance, supported controlled and consistent dosing, and still felt intentional and brand-aligned. For the Shake ‘n Baked cannabis-infused seasonings specifically, there was an additional layer of complexity: the product lived at the intersection of cannabis and the kitchen, and the packaging needed to honor both contexts simultaneously.

The Thinking

The Shake ‘n Baked brief was the most interesting to solve. Cannabis-infused seasonings are used the way any spice is used — measured, sprinkled, integrated into cooking. The packaging needed to support that behavior while meeting every regulatory and child-resistance requirement. A standard cannabis package wouldn’t communicate the product correctly. A standard spice package wouldn’t meet compliance.

Watch the Case Study Video:

The solution was a custom box housing a childproof glass jar and an eco-friendly bamboo teaspoon. The box created the retail presence and brand story. The glass jar met child-resistance requirements. And the bamboo teaspoon solved something complex. Each dose was calibrated to exactly one teaspoon, which meant the kitchen staff had to develop a production process precise enough to guarantee consistent THC content per serving. In the cannabis world, dosing accuracy isn’t a preference. It’s a safety requirement and a legal one. The spoon wasn’t a design flourish. It was the dosing system, and everything around it had to be built to support that function.

Every element had a reason to be there.

The Work

Beyond Shake ‘n Baked, I developed packaging across multiple edible product lines within the Berkshire Roots portfolio, each requiring its own compliance review, die line preparation, and vendor coordination. The work demanded rigorous attention to detail at every stage, from copy compliance to print production, because in a regulated environment the margin for error is zero.

What This Project Demonstrates

Regulatory compliance expertise, constraint-driven creative problem solving, multi-SKU system design, and the ability to deliver technically precise work without losing the brand.
